As we only have one key that works easily for the dead bolt on our front door we decided Saturday afternoon to change the dead bolt assembly.
The B&B we stayed at in Meaford had the type of locks where instead of a key you type in a 4 digit number to unlock the door. These seemed very cool and modern so we wandered off to Lowe's to purchase one.
Arriving home we soon discovered our dead bolt assembly was too close to our latch to install this modern day wonder on our door.
Back to Lowe's to return the lock & pick up a regular keyed dead bolt.
Now I know its not rocket science to install one of these things but this thing proved to be difficult. I couldn't get the front & back to line up properly to get the two long bolts in. After much frustration & mrv's help I finally got the fool thing to align and finished the installation.
The key would not move in the lock!! Something inside was screwed up.
Now I had to go back to Lowe's yet again but mrv had gone out for awhile & we had no lock on the front door.
No problem - I'll leave Zoe in the house while I'm gone. A 100 lb. german shepard should keep people from wandering in unwanted.
Let Zoe in & discovered Greg (see my last post) had been outside & Zoe had been running her route around the backyard.
Muddy dog prints all over the hall floor.
Put the dog back outside, clean the floor & head back to Lowe's - by this time I really don't care if someone gets in the house.
By the way - did I mention I'm getting rained on every time I walk out of Lowe's ??
Pick up a 3rd lock set & head home - yes, I did get wet again.
This one went in in 10 minutes & required only one small adjustment to work to perfection.
Its hard to gain any satisfaction from an hours job that takes almost 5 hours to complete.
I did feel better after a great supper at Limoncello's though.

I think that's how the carpenter learns, Bob. It's called trial and error. Problem is when you're a do-it-yourselfer, you usually only get to use what you learned once. Then , next time it's a different problem and you start the learning process all over again. Had any chemistry problems lately ?
Ugh!!! What a cruddy way to spend 5 hours!!!!
but I'm laughing a little bit....
so, is Lowes as good as they say it is?
nice that after that you got a decent meal, though :)

Chemistry problems are good - they pay me to solve them & I have all the tools I need.

I'm laughing about it now

So far I really like Lowe's but that may be just because I dislike Home Depot so much
