High Tech

I'm pretty proud of myself this week.

I wanted to get a small CD player to have with me on midnights next week. Looking around Canadian Tire I found something for about $50.

Right next to it was a MP3 player on sale for $30.

The kid sales guy assured me it was an excellent buy - so I took the plunge & purchased it.

Then I had to figure out not only how to work the thing but also how to download music to it.

I have now downloaded Lime Wire & Java to my laptop & have successfully downloaded a couple of songs to the MP3 player.

Yeah me !!

I tried the MP3 thing about a year ago. My car has a " Radio Only " and GM advises against up-grading. The radio controls all the electronics in the car. I thought the MP3 would be great for trips. When I tried to install the software on my computer, it messed the computer up so bad, I had to call the tech to straighten it out. Seems that software doesn't like Windows 2000. Took the MP3 back for a refund. So, now I have to be satisfied with AM/FM standard programming. Such is life.

That's a song too isn't it? Beatles?

I would just caution using LimeWire. I understand that program to be illegal - in that you do not pay for the music you download through them. itunes is another great program - it allows you to search for a number of artists and songs, and you actually purchase the music.

hey, congratulations. its nice that the technology can even be cheaper now than older forms.

Canada's a bit different for downloading laws, but I'd also be a bit leery of Limewire, for other reasons

Limewire as a program is legal anywhere - the filesharing is legal in Canada, because our copyright laws are different - however; it still does affect an artist if one doesn't pay for their song, and may be an issue of conscience. But with our copyright laws, its generally not restricted unless you're profiting from it (reselling CDs made from downloads, etc).

I'm much more cautious about the potential to get viruses and unwanted monitoring, etc. through Limewire. I do only use iTunes myself, and 99.9% of that is just for the CDs I own.

Welcome to the 21st century! Kim had an Ipod before we were married and we hardly use it anymore. I suppose we have so many other electronic toys to fiddle with, there just isn't enough room in my pocket!

I-Tunes confuses me!

Lime Wire was recommended to me by our university co-ops who both said they used it extensively without any virus problems.

The free part honestly doesn't bother me much - over the years I've bought & paid for LP's, eight tracts & Cd's so I figure its about time I got something for free :)

Mostly I download classic rock & don't think the Stones are going to go broke because I downloaded "under my thumb" for free.

If I wanted some new stuff by a non-millionaire type group my conscience would make me pay for it but at this point in my life not a lot of it interests me.

true! i find generally the smaller the band, the more i'll buy from them and the more i want to meet them and encourage them.

if they're making millions and being tripped over by adoring fans... not so much :)

the real condundrum comes with the mid-size bands toughing it out.
