The newest employee, a girl who grew up in Hamilton, was talking about working as a waitress while going to university. She worked for Red Lobster and regaled us with some very funny stories of things that had happened and some very odd customers.
She went on to tell us, though, that none of the staff liked working the early shift on Sunday because that's when the "Christians" come into the restaurant.
I'm afraid our reputation amoung the wait staff is very poor:
- we give the staff a hard time about "working on the Lord's Day". Very hard for non-christians to figure out what we are doing in the restaurant if we really believe this.
- we treat the wait staff very poorly yet expect the best in service
- we are very poor tippers. Leaving a pile of small change & a tract is not appreciated.
I didn't really know how to respond except to say not all Christians are like that. Her reply was that, in her case anyway, any who announced in some way they were Christian were that way.

Wow. That's sad.
I remember having a conversation during which the other person, who IS a Christian, said it's not a good idea to do business with Christians. At first I was shocked, and so I asked why she would say that.
She told me that Christians expect everything and expect it for free. I know I'm not like that and I know that a lot of people are not like that. But when I thought about it, I realized that there are too many Christians like that.
I wonder where that comes from. (I have ideas, but no real answers).
When people tell me Christians are...(fill in the blank), I simply say what you said, which is they're not all like that, and/or "well, Christian doesn't mean perfect or un-flawed". Then I pray and hope like heck I'm showing the person something different.
I've heard those comments too. It's a sad witness when people come out of church after worship service, prophesying and speaking in tongues and then curse at the waitress because the soup isn't hot enough! You can do those things and still be as mean as a snake. I pray that the fruit of the Spirit be shown through my life....Love,joy, peace etc... and give good tips! Do unto others as you would have them do unto you! I love blessing people! I don't think anyone from CF is like the ones your friend described, at least not the ones I've had lunch with.
My brother-in-law is in the funeral business and he doesn't like hiring Christians. Why? They don't want to work on Sunday! They're all out to lunch letting people work to serve them! I wish I had answers because it makes it really hard to witness to people like him. Ghandi said " I would have become a Christian until I met one".
We have allot of work to do on our reputation.
I just thought of a bumper sticker I saw on a car in the parking lot at work. I liked it. I think we should all get one. It said something like this:
" The only difference between a non-Christian and a Christian is we're going to heaven and you're not!"
It may of said " We're forgiven and you're not".... That sounds a little less arrogant.
Ouch.
Truthfully - we usually overtip, just to make up for all the other Christians who undertip or don't tip or treat the wait staff rudely.
There are a lot of them. It's not just an urban myth....
Oh, for what it's worth, I've had this conversation with my sister-in-law. She lives in downtown Toronto, and had waited many tables in many places.
She says Christians aren't so bad - the vegans are terrible customers and terrible tippers.
Yeah - M & I tend to over tip ourselves.
And a big thank you to the vegans out there.
LOL Bob on the vegan shout out! :)
I may be weird but there are times i like standing in longish lines ... when there are people all frustrated with cashiers (like it's their fault) ... I make a point of looking them in the eyes, smiling and saying something to brighten their day.
CIVILITY ... goes a long way in most interactions. I learned the tipping skills from my brother the TO waiter! :)
Excuse my ignorance, but what's a vegan? I've never heard of that before.
My wife informed me that my brother-in-law likes hiring Christians now.She didn't say why. I guess I'll have to look at his web site to get some clues.Peoples opinions do change. I guess things are looking up for us!
a vegan is a very strict vegetarian. they won't consume animal products like eggs, milk, and cheese. they are typically the really skinny and ill-looking vegetarians (in my humble opinion).
dad, i think your work mate had a fairly typical opinion of christians, unfortunately.
and isn't it funny that most christians look down on those working retail on sundays or doing groceries on sundays, and yet they buy gas, get coffee, and go to lunch?
Thanks Christine. I just learned a new word! I just called them vegetarians. They could add a little meat to their tips so the poor waitress can afford to eat!
groan!!!!!!!
