Perspectives

I was reading Acts 12 the other day - you know the story of Peter's miraculous escape from prison.

I've read it quite a few times & have heard many sermons based on it.

Some funny things - the angel having to hit Peter in the side to wake him up & then Rhoda being so excited about seeing Peter at the door of the prayer meeting she forgets to open the door for him.

What I had never noticed before was the opening two verses:
"It was about this time that King Herod arrested some who belonged to the church, intending to persecute them. He had James, the brother of John, put to death with the sword."

Great faith building story from Peter's perspective but what about poor James ??

I always pictured the believers at that prayer meeting whooping it up when Peter shows up & tells his story - now I can see James' friends & family off it one corner wondering why Peter was set free & not James.

Yup. That's a story that also needs to be told.

Have you read Erwin McManus' "The Barbarian Way"? Talks about Hebrews 11 - those heroes that are named who were brought back to life, rescued etc. And then the many, many more ... too many to be named ... who were martyred, persecuted ... and still heroes of faith.
