We bought a hanging tomato plant & a hanging strawberry plant earlier this year not really knowing what to expect.
So far we have picked (and eaten) lots of little tomatoes with lots more on the way even if the plant itself looks like death warmed over.
The strawberry plant has lots of flowers but only a few berries so far but the plant looks really really healthy.
We had to get hanging plants because our dog just loves to play with any kind of planter located on the ground.
I got some ferns from the old guy a couple of houses down & replanted them 4 times before giving up & moving them to the front yard :)

it's funny you wrote that about the plants: our tomato is high-producing but looks like crap and our strawberry plant is medium producting and looks wonderful :)
