Pondering

I've been thinking about this whole homosexual thing lately and know that my attitude towards gays has changed quite a bit over the years.

But, I also realize that its easy to consider yourself liberal on the subject when you don't know any gay/lesbian people personally, anywhere - work, church or socially.

I wonder what my reaction would be if one moved in next door or the next new analyst at work was openly gay or if a gay couple wanted to make CF their church home ?

I know my reaction to each of those situations would be totally different today that it would have been 10 years ago but would they be the right reactions ??

I can't believe how many times this topic has come up in conversations I've had this week.

All with entirely different people.

I have known some gays over the years. Have currently lost track of them. Several in business and several socially. My reaction has always been to treat them as Jesus would have. You love the sinner , but, you despise the sin. You treat them the same as anyone else but don't compromise your beliefs. I would watch the Gay Pride Parade if it was passing in front of me, but, I wouldn't walk in it. I would not disassociate myself from a neighbor because that would be withholding the opportunity to witness. It's a very controversial subject and could take up a lot of space discussing all the ramifications.

We have had gay people at CF. They are people just like everyone else. You wouldn't know by looking at them. There is a good book on the subject written by Tony Campolo. I might have spelled his name wrong. It changed my view of homosexuality. There is a huge difference between sexual orientation and sexual behavior. The latter is sin, the former is not. It is possible to be homosexual and a Christian and right before God, just as it is for a single heterosexual that is monogamous. Get the book. I think Pastor Roy has it. It may help you muchly.

"There is a huge difference between sexual orientation and sexual behavior."

Correction:

I should have said homosexual orientation and homosexual behavior.

Well, you can also have this discussion on Sunday with your grand-daughter. She'll be very proud (don't mind the pun) that you are not a *hater*.

Right now, the conversation between my children,

Jordie says, "Jesse, what would you do if a guy asked you out?"

Jesse: "No thank you, I'm not gay."

Jordie: "The word gay is offensive to gay people"

Jesse: "then I'd say no thank you, I'm not homosexual."

Jordie: "Seriously?"

and it continues on. I'm sensing some parental intervention will be required soon...

The more open the society the more confusion living everyday life. Soon it may be impossible not to offend someone not matter how careful you are.
