Working From Home

I am supposed to have our quality manual finished by Friday for the lab supervisors to review. I'm close but still have some work to do.
My boss suggested I work from home a couple of days this week - away from the distractions of co-workers, phone calls & e-mails.
This morning I decided to stay home & give it a try.
I didn't miss the 45 minutes plus on the QEW & I really enjoyed getting out of bed at 7 instead of 6 : )
I was sitting in front of my laptop just after 8 with a coffee by my side - just like being at work so far.
With mrv off to the church I had the house to myself & actually got a lot of work done.
I noticed though that distractions are still part of life - just different ones at home.
  • the racket outside from the garbage trucks - have to have a look just to see how far they tossed the bins today
  • my dog looking in at me through the patio doors letting me know how nice a day it is & how nice it would be to go for a walk
  • mail
  • access to crossword sites & game sites that "smart filter" keep from tempting me at work
  • I know there is a baseball game on TV this afternoon (I love baseball)

I plan to work at home today and Wednesday then back to work on Thursday.

Except for the drive I miss being at work - I don't think I have the self- discipline to work from home on a continuous basis & all morning I wondered what goodies my co-workers were enjoying at break :)

i couldn't do it ...
i have no discipline ...

i usually roll my eyes when pastor's call in and say "working from home today"

(that's not a commentary on any pastor that might be checking out this blog)

i would like the luxury of working in jammies or maybe getting the laptop out on to the back deck ... but then ...

the birds would be calling ...
and there would be flowers to look at ...

i'm offended.

:)

but when i'm working from home, it's usually on a saturday, and i'm desperately trying to finish a sermon. and yes, i AM in my jammies, with the laptop, on the back deck.

judge if you must!

We really are created to be in communion, are we not ? Except for some, like me,who were "only childs "
Even after sixty-three years away from my parent's environment, I still find no problem entertaining/amusing/working/organizing/disciplining/ myself in a solo environment. Mind you, I still prefer to be with people, but if no one's here, things still get done. Where am I going with these thoughts ? I dunno'- I'm lost - just blogging !

Looks like blogging is a distraction too Bob! lol. Wish I could work from home too. Backing a bus in and out of the driveway would get boring after a while.

I was really surprised with my "working from home" experience. While it is nice to be home with a sick child or not navigating snowy roads, it is frustrating to be trying to do my job without all of the resources that are usually at my fingertips.. and without dialling into programs or other workers..

i thought it would be much better..much more like getting away with something!

I actually get a ton more done when I work from home.

I get up at the same time and utilize the time I would normally spend driving.

I bring my coffee and sometimes munchies to my desk. The night before I've made sure my desk is supplied with all of the things I could possibly need.

I schedule a break. If I feel like a break before it's scheduled, too bad - I work until break-time. The doggies are on a schedule, too. (otherwise I'd be up and down letting them in and out all day)

I schedule a 45 min lunch break and I use it to do housework or errands. Otherwise I would do "just one more little thing" around the house - over and over until the day is gone.

I'm miserable with people who try to phone and chat with me - they think that if you are home you are not working, so therefore they can interrupt you. I'm not necessarily suggesting that you follow my example on the being miserable. :)

Anyway, there are a ton of tricks I've learned and I've found that I can get twice as much done from home as I can from the office. And I don't have to fight stupid Toronto traffic at rush hour, which is good for my health I think.
